Hello, my name is Devin Lally and I have gluten sensitivity. The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?
I am a 22-year-old graduate student at Chatham University studying to earn my masters in Professional Writing. I graduated in May, 2014 from Washington & Jefferson College with a degree in English, a minor in Spanish, and a certificate in Professional Writing. Aside from writing, I enjoy riding and competing with my Arabian horses, and I am also an avid runner. As you will learn...I am additionally adopting a new, gluten-free lifestyle.
The year 2013 was one full of stomach pains, skin problems, and frustration. I was a senior at Washington & Jefferson College, and with graduation around the corner, my life was on the brink of change. To me, these problems seemed to stem from nothing more than stress. My cardiologist father and nurse mother gave me the classic "it's a long way from your heart" speech. Little by little, the stomach pains became worse. One evening, while relaxing and watching a movie with my boyfriend Sam, I felt my stomach drop about five feet. I began to sweat and grew short of breath. Sam quickly called my father who ordered him to drive me to the hospital if I did not feel better in five minutes. I soon assured everyone I was fine...I have a pretty convincing "happy face."
"This is the final straw!" Sam announced, "You need to see a doctor." Ugh. Doctors.
This past summer I finally trudged my way into a gastrointestinal doctor's office. I sat down next to the rest of the 80-year-old patients and subtly rolled my eyes as they each shot me an inquisitive look. After my examination, the doctor ordered tests and narrowed my diagnosis. After the tests, my fears calmed when the most serious of possibilities were ruled out. The doctor told me I most likely have IBS and gluten sensitivity...two illnesses thatcan be treated by a gluten free diet.
I created this blog to document my journey as a gluten free newbie. Well, not quite gluten free. Being gluten sensitive, I consider myself an "inbetweener." I am able to indulge every now and then without completely wrecking my stomach or putting myself in danger. I suppose it is kind of like rolling the dice...I can choose to eat gluten, but there is always a chance I will get mildly sick. I have been playing the gluten game since July, 2014, and I hope to inspire, help, and offer guidance to other gluten inbetweeners. On my blog you will find my favorite recipes, cool research and facts on gluten intolerance, and tips for an overall healthy, gluten-free lifestyle.
